Test Series

upsc test series

test series to suit the level of preparation for ias exam; (i) Freshers, (ii) Beginners, (iii) Repeaters

Introduction

Dear IAS aspirants,

Understand firstly that your ultimate aim is to score top rank in civil Services Examination, for which your score in Mains written exams carries high weightage. Considering UPSC Exam pattern, to score good marks in mains many (almost all) suggest that you have to join test series. Though it is true that writing mock tests and getting it evaluated by experts is essential, but one set of Test Series may not be beneficial for all. To explain this let us categorize the candidates in following groups;

  • Freshers: Candidates who have just started the preparation or those who have not yet finished the syllabus.
  • Beginners: Candidates who have been preparing for sufficient period of time or those who have almost covered the syllabus.
  • Repeaters: Candidates who have already written CS (M) exam/s and are preparing for the next exam.

The preparation and understanding level of candidates in all the above three categories varies, so they need tests according to their level. UPSC Test Series provided by most of the institutes / faculties do not cater to the basic requirements of the candidates, as mentioned above. Online test series offered by others are common for all students irrespective of their level of preparation.

Realising the same we at A A Shah’s IAS Institute have formulated different Test Series Courses to suit each of the above categories. Candidates have to choose the online test series for UPSC 2021 according to their level of preparation. So you decide which is the best UPSC course.

Candidates are first of all required to understand the intention of UPSC in conducting the Mains Written Exams. It has been declared by UPSC itself in the notification in the following words;

“The main Examination is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates rather than merely the range of their information and memory.

The nature and standard of questions in the General Studies papers (Paper II to Paper V) will be such that a well educated person will be able to answer them without any specialized study. The questions will be such as to test a candidate’s general awareness of a variety of subjects, which will have relevance for a career in Civil Services. The questions are likely to test the candidate’s basic understanding of all relevant issues, and ability to analyze, and take a view on conflicting socio-economic goals, objectives and demands.

The candidates must give relevant, meaningful and succinct answers.
The scope of the syllabus for optional subject papers (Paper VI and Paper VII) for the examination is broadly of the honours degree level i.e. a level higher than the bachelors’ degree and lower than the masters’ degree. In the case of Engineering, Medical Science and law, the level corresponds to the bachelors’ degree.”

Hence, UPSC exam pattern for IAS 2021, Syllabus of UPSC Civil Services Exams are to be properly gone through by each candidate. candidates must be good at;

Content: Good content to write,

Structure: Points / sentences arranged in logical sequences.

Vocabulary: Good vocabulary will help you express your ideas in limited words and in effective manner.

Essay

Paper I – Essay (250 Marks)

upsc CS(M) Essay paper

Know, understand and practice essay for upsc

Introduction
There are 7 papers of 250 marks each, which are counted for score (2 language papers of 300 marks each are qualifying papers). To improve your score and rank, marks in Essay paper carries the weightage. With good score in Essay paper your rank will improve and it is relatively easy to score good mark in this paper.
Generally speaking, before attempting any exam candidates are required to know and understand the syllabus and the pattern of the exam. With respect to paper-I Essay, candidates erroneously presume that there isn’t and there can’t be any syllabus for this paper. In fact UPSC has provided syllabus for this paper as well. Hence, it is important for candidates to know and adhere to the syllabus.
Syllabus:

“Candidates will be required to write an essay on a specific topic. The choice of subjects will be given.
They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.”

Pattern:

Secondly, we have to understand the exam pattern. There are two sections; Section A and Section B. There are 4 topics given in each section. Candidates have to write one essay in each section having 125 marks each. Candidates have to write each essay in about 1,000 to 1,200 words. Remember the time for the paper is 3 hours. Now let us know how these 180 minutes (3 hours) are to be effectively used to write GS-IV Essay paper.
Further, regarding the main Examination, UPSC has declared that it is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates rather than merely the range of their information and memory.

Learn how to write Essay in 3 easy steps:
Step No. 1:
Select one essay topic each from Section A and Section B:

(i) First of all read all the topics.
(ii) Try to understand the topics by reading the same multiple times, till you are able to eliminate the topic.
(iii) Try to focus on remaining topics and start jotting down the points.
(iv) During this process finalise the topic (for each section) on which you are confident of writing good essay.
(v) Devote sufficient time to complete this process. It may consume 20 minutes, but let it not be more than 30 minutes. Remember, once you start writing an essay without following the above procedure, there are chances that you may find it difficult to complete the essay and in half way you may have to shift to another topic. That will lead to wastage of crucial time leading to mental pressure thereby affecting the quality of performance.

Step No. 2:
Add, re-arrange and finalise the points:

(i) Apply your mind to add, re-arrange and finalise the points about the topic on which you have decided to write the essay. It is necessary to do so as before you start writing you should be clear in your mind how to structure your essay. Adding points or sentences subsequently in already written essay will create a mess.
(ii) While re-arranging and finalising the points adhere to the sequence; introduction, body and conclusion.
(iii) Obviously this will also consume some time. Be careful not to devote more than 20 to 30 minutes.

Step No. 3:
Start writing essays:
(i) Start writing the essay by framing proper sentences as per the points jotted down and finally arranged by you.
(ii) Your essay should be easy to understand or follow and comprehensive, succinct, composite and definite, as well as informative and logical.
(iii) Give proportionate time and weightage to Section A and Section B.
(iv) Divide your time smartly. It is generally noticed that candidates don’t watch time while writing paper in exam. Ultimately they realise, but very lately, that little time is left for the next section or question. In essay paper, candidates have to sum up the essay in Section B haphazardly, as they don’t have proportionate time to complete the Section B thereby adversely affecting the quality of essay.
Follow the tips to enhance your essay writing skill given by the faculties at A A Shah’s IAS Institute. Few of the points are;
(a) Don’t deviate from the subject
(b) Don’t get personal
(c) Avoid extreme or highly unpopular opinions.
(d) Stick to the subject of the topic. Always write what is asked, not what you know or feel like.
(e) Your essay should be expansive, multi-dimensional and balanced. You shouldn’t harp upon a single perspective throughout the essay.
