India-Africa Summit to focus on development inititatives
BILATERAL – INDIA-AFRICA
22 APRIL 2026
- The Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit will be held in New Delhi at the end of May 2026, focusing on development, education, capacity building, diplomacy, and defence cooperation between India and African countries.
- The summit is important because it is being held after more than a decade, as the last one took place in 2015.
- It also comes at a time of global supply chain disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions like the U.S.-Israel attack on Iran, although Africa’s supply chains remain relatively stable for India.
Challenges in India-Africa Engagement
- India provides low-interest loans for infrastructure and development projects in Africa.
- India will have to ensure that it matches its commitment to African states with implementation.
- Experts highlight that India currently implements only around 40% of its commitments, and improving execution and delivery will be crucial for building trust.
- There is also a shift in expectations, as African countries now prefer Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) over traditional Lines of Credit, requiring greater involvement from Indian businesses.
Key Initiatives and Opportunities
- The summit will showcase initiatives such as the IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania and review India’s growing strategic and economic engagement in Africa.
- India has expanded its diplomatic footprint by opening 16 new missions since 2018, increasing its presence to 45 African countries and strengthening ties with the African Union.
