8 SEPTEMBER 2025
- The year’s second—and final—blood moon of 2025, happened on September 7–8, 2025.
- The first total lunar eclipse of 2025 occurred on March 13–14, 2025, marking the first blood moon since November 2022
- A blood moon is a term often used to describe a total lunar eclipse, when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon.
- Instead of going completely dark, the Moon takes on a reddish or coppery color.
- This happens because:
- Sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere.
- The atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths of light (blue and green).
- Longer wavelengths (red and orange) bend around the Earth and fall onto the Moon’s surface.
- That’s why the Moon looks red—similar to how the sky looks reddish during sunrise or sunset.
