Blood Moon observed on September 7–8, 2025

8 SEPTEMBER 2025

  • The year’s second—and final—blood moon of 2025, happened on September 7–8, 2025.
  • The first total lunar eclipse of 2025 occurred on March 13–14, 2025, marking the first blood moon since November 2022
  • A blood moon is a term often used to describe a total lunar eclipse, when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon.
  • Instead of going completely dark, the Moon takes on a reddish or coppery color.
  • This happens because:
  1. Sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere.
  2. The atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths of light (blue and green).
  3. Longer wavelengths (red and orange) bend around the Earth and fall onto the Moon’s surface.
  4. That’s why the Moon looks red—similar to how the sky looks reddish during sunrise or sunset.
