BNP secures landslide victory in Bangladesh

- The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, won a landslide victory in Bangladesh’s Parliamentary Elections.
- This marks the BNP’s return to power in Dhaka after nearly two decades.
- BNP-led alliance secured 212 seats, giving it a two-thirds majority in the Jatiyo Sansad.
- The 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 77 seats.
- Independent candidates won 8 seats.
- In a national referendum, 60.2% of voters approved democratic reform measures.
- In 2024, a mass uprising led to the removal of the previous government under Sheikh Hasina.
- Parliament was dissolved, and many members of the former ruling party left the country.
- The interim government was established to oversee reforms and conduct fresh elections.
- The interim government is led by Chief Adviser and Nobel Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus.
