National Green Hydrogen Mission

ENVIRONMENT – SCHEMES

7 SEPTEMBER 2025

  • National Green Hydrogen Mission, announced in Union Budget 2023, aims to produce at least five million metric tonnes of green hydrogen per year by the year 2030, a milestone on the way to achieving nationwide net zero emissions by 2070.
  • Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition Programme (SIGHT) is a sub-scheme under the mission to fund domestic manufacturing of electrolysers and produce green hydrogen.
  • States and regions capable of supporting large scale production and/or utilization of hydrogen will be identified and developed as Green Hydrogen Hubs.
Hydrogen is one of the most abundant elements on earth for a cleaner alternative fuel option. Type of hydrogen depend up on the process of its formation: Black hydrogen is produced by use of fossil fuel Brown hydrogen is produced using coal where the emissions are released into air Grey hydrogen is produced from natural gas where emissions are released to the air. Blue hydrogen is produced from natural gas, where emissions are captured using carbon capture and storage. Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis of water using renewable energy (like Solar, Wind) and has a lower carbon footprint. Electricity splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. By Products: Water, Water Vapour. It is a zero-carbon fuel  Pink hydrogen is produced through electrolysis, but using energy from nuclear power sources.
