U.S. President Donald Trump has “actively discussed” purchase of Greenland from Denmark with his team, White House said, saying he preferred diplomacy but would not rule out military action.
Mr. Trump believes acquiring Greenland would be in the interest of U.S. national security.
“He views it in the best interest of the United States to deter Russian and Chinese aggression in the Arctic region.”
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that a U.S. takeover would amount to the end of the NATO military alliance of which Denmark is a member.
Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark and thus part of NATO.
The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom joined Ms. Frederiksen in a statement reaffirming that the mineral-rich island “belongs to its people”.
