India–U.S. Interim Trade Agreement (Textiles Focus)
- India is expected to receive similar textile export benefits under its upcoming interim trade agreement with the U.S. as those granted to Bangladesh under its recent deal.
Bangladesh–U.S. trade deal
- Under the Bangladesh–U.S. trade deal, general reciprocal tariff on exports to the U.S. was 19%
- If Bangladesh imports cotton from the U.S., processes it into textiles, and exports it to the U.S., the tariff becomes 0%.
- This clause gives Bangladesh a competitive edge in textiles if it uses U.S. raw materials.
What India Is Expected to Get
- According to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, India will receive the same facility — zero reciprocal tariff on textile exports if raw materials (like cotton) are sourced from the U.S.
- The interim deal is still being finalized.
Impact on Farmers
- Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal also stated that Indian farmers could benefit from increased exports under India’s FTAs with European Union, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway and Australia
