POLITY – ELECTIONS
11 JUNE 2026
- After urging the Election Commission (EC) to set aside the rejection of the nomination of the Congress’s Rajya Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh, Meenakshi Natarajan, the Opposition party is set to move the Supreme Court against the rejection
- Ms. Natarajan’s nomination for one of the three seats to the Upper House from the State was rejected by the Returning Officer (RO) after allegations that she had “hidden” details of a case against her in Hyderabad.
- “This is a subversion of democracy… We still have full faith in constitutional institutions. That is why we are fighting this battle,” Ms. Natarajan told presspersons after the meeting.
- Mr. Abhishek Singhvi led the party’s legal arguments before the poll body.
- Referring to provisions of the Representation of the People Act, Mr. Singhvi said the EC’s own law had Section 33A, which stated that one has to disclose only those cases which have a punishment of over two years and more importantly, only those cases in which charges have been framed.
