Classical Dances of India

India’s classical dance traditions are rooted in the Natya Shastra, an ancient Sanskrit text on the performing arts.

While the Sangeet Natak Akademi recognizes 8 official classical dance forms, the Ministry of Culture also includes Chhau.

Bharatanatyam

  • State: Tamil Nadu
  • Propounder / Key Figures: Sage Bharata (Natya Shastra); modernized by Rukmini Devi Arundale and E. Krishna Iyer.
  • Features: Known for its fixed upper torso, bent-leg posture (Aramandi), crisp footwork, intricate hand gestures (mudras), and accompaniment by Carnatic music.

Kathak

  • Features: Characterized by rapid footwork (Tatkar), fast spins (Chakkars), narrative expression, and a unique blend of Hindu devotion with Mughal court aesthetics.
  • Main Performers: Pandit Birju Maharaj, Lacchu Maharaj, Sitara Devi, Shovana Narayan, Kumudini Lakhia, Saswati Sen.

Kathakali

  • State: Kerala
  • Propounder / Key Figures: Kottarakkara Thampuran (created Ramanattam, the precursor to Kathakali).
  • Features: Male-dominated dance-drama featuring color-coded facial makeup (Pacca, Kathi), grand headgear, and narrative storytelling delivered strictly through eye movements (Nethra Abhinaya) and hand gestures.

Odissi

  • Features: Defined by the Tribhangi (three-fold body bend) stance, Chowk posture, and fluid torso movements that mirror ancient temple wall sculptures.

Kuchipudi

  • State: Andhra Pradesh

  • Features: Combines solo dance with dramatic acting, featuring fast rhythmic sequences and a signature balance on the rim of a brass plate (Tarangam).

Manipuri

  • State: Manipur

  • Features: Gentle, undulating movements focusing on devotion and rhythm over heavy foot-stamping, with female performers wearing stiff, cylindrical skirts (Kumil).

Mohiniyattam

  • State: Kerala
  • Propounder / Key Figures: Swathi Thirunal (Travancore King) and Vallathol Narayana Menon (revived via Kerala Kalamandalam).
  • Features: Graceful solo dance by women featuring soft, swaying body movements reminiscent of ocean waves, performed in white-and-gold Kasavu saris.
  • Main Performers: Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma, Bharati Shivaji, Sunanda Nair, Gopika Varma, Kanak Rele.

Sattriya

  • State: Assam
  • Propounder / Key Figures: Srimanta Sankardev (15th-century saint and polymath).
  • Features: Developed within monastic halls (Sattras), utilizing devotional themes, traditional Assamese Muga silk attire, and rhythm from Bhor cymbals and drums.

Chhau (Ministry of Culture Recognition)

  • State: Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha
  • Propounder / Key Figures: Royal patrons of Mayurbhanj, Seraikela, and Purulia estates.
  • Features: Martial arts-inspired classical form containing athletic leaps, acrobatics, and regional usage of elaborate traditional masks.
  • Main Performers: Guru Makar Dhwaja Darogha, Pandit Gopal Prasad Dubey, Shashadhar Acharya, Kedar Nath Sahoo.
