- The BJP criticised the Congress, describing it as an “army of traitors”, after its Parliamentary Party Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, presented the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament, and Development for 2024 to Michelle Bachelet, the former President of Chile and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
- He alleged that Ms. Bachelet attacked India’s sovereignty through her remarks against the abrogation of Article 370 and her objection to the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
- “CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) is a law passed by Parliament. It was challenged in the Supreme Court… At whose behest did the UN Human Rights Commission, headed by Ms. Michelle Bachelet, file a petition in the Supreme Court, saying that CAA would violate human rights?” BJP spokesperson said.
- The award was instituted by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust in 1986.
