1 JUNE 2026

  • Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil ended his fast-unto-death after Maharashtra Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Legislative Council member Prasad Lad handed over a 12-point proposal of the Mahayuti government addressing key demands related to granting reservation to the community.
    • Sitting in the open under intense summer heat, Mr. Jarange-Patil had launched the hunger strike, his ninth in the last three years, a day ealier from Antarwali Sarati in Jalna district.
    • He renewed his demand to issue certificates to members of the Maratha community recognising them as Kunbis, an agrarian caste included in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, which would make them eligible for reservation in education, and government jobs under the OBC quota.
    • According to government sources, the proposal includes issuing Kunbi certificates within three months with District Collectors monitoring the process every 15 days, a separate Ministry for the Maratha community, withdrawal of cases registered against protesters who participated in past agitations, and implementation of the Satara gazette that has records related to Marathas in parts of western Maharashtra after a detailed study.
    • Mr. Jarange-Patil has set the government a one-month deadline to fulfil the 12-point proposal.
    • Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the assurances extended by the government are already in the public domain and no fresh commitments have been made.
